THE VIDEO DEAD (2009)
Video installation with found-footage
The Video Dead is an installation based on two video projection with audio. It was a collection of short fragments of distorted, recomposed or re-edited found footage from old VHS tapes. It's been set up in a parking garage during the Made in Arnhem festival in 2009. One screen was close to the audience, near the sidewalk and the other was far inside the parking lot. The audience could see both screens through the gates. The sound from the second screen came from deep within the concrete structure. Creating a divuse echoing sound. I made the spaceship sequense especially for this.
SEE THROUGH EYES (2009)
non-narative film with fotographic material and found footage
See Through Eyes
(Bertin van Vliet, 2009)
'See Trough Eyes' is a short experimental film by Bertin.
The film consist mostly of still photography and abstract geometric graphics.
The images chosen are mountains (mount Fuji and the Swiss Alps), skyscrapers and masks of different ethnic groups around the world. Some moving images are excerpts from 'Breakfast at Tiffany's' and a scene of a crane lifting a car wreck. These fragments have heavy colour and contrast adjustments.
The sound is a fragmented montage of desert wind, human breathing, noise and rumble taken of the soundtrack of 'El Topo' and 'Woman under the influence'. The music is also taken from El Topo. And the drone music is original.
The film is a non narative with a strong graphical associative form, none the less there is also a suggestion to a storyline. There is repetition and variation in scenes. At some point the masks are like characters who have a dialogue. Although the words are in Spanish or made inaudible. The final scene seems to be inspired by a western style shoot out. We clearly hear a gun, see a flash and a mask dissolves into a skull. This is made clear with continuity editing, and there is even a suggestion of space.
In the earlier scenes, where abstract figures rhythmically vary on a background of skyscrapers set to a clear blue sky. There is a feeling of continuity and progress but no story-line can be detected. Later there is the sound of a woman whistling and the figures are edited on her melody.
The holes in the masks are obviously the See Through Eyes. But this title could also mean; To see through someones else's eyes, or to look with a clear few to things.
This film functions to inspire or trigger a subjective implicit meaning in the connections between the assembled images, sounds and figures. Most images are whell known to us. By repeating serten images with geometric forms like the triangle, they gain in almost symbolic or religious value.
